CHAPTER SEVEN
Rachel wonderful Rachel,
My boss has given me a raise. The extra pounds will go toward a better living accompaniment, better meals, better everything. Perhaps someday we will live together in our own tranquil manor. Our children will be beautiful, well fed, and educated by the finest governesses. I want to spend the rest of my life building a future with you.
Love and salutations,
Michael
My bedroom could not provide me with enough insulation to protect me from sickness and pain. The cooks in the kitchen on the first floor had been kind enough to fix stew and eggs for me each morning. I continued to keep in contact with Ms. Harris, who sent me a few extra blankets and pillows accompanied by a box of bread and fruit. I even received a letter from Garry, who informed me of his new wooden leg. He sent me a small clay horse that he made himself. Ms. Harris was so concerned for my welfare that she even told Dr. Laine about my injuries.
On a quiet winter morning, I heard a knock on my door.
“Come on in.” I called from my bed.
A creak of the door sounded as it slowly opened. On the other side appeared two of the downstairs cooks holding a tray that displayed a vegetable omelet with a side of cinnamon bread and goat milk.
“We have fixed you a healthy and hearty breakfast, Miss Rachel.” The short and stout cook with the bald head performed a mock bow at the foot of my bed.
I missed that title. I forgot just how much I enjoyed it when Mrs. Miller and her family addressed me as “miss”.
“If you would like anything else, send us a note.” The tall and lean cook with the red moustache said.
They waved farewell before slowly closing the door to avoid the creaking noise as a means of courtesy. I took a bite out of my omelet as the cat slinked up to the side of my bed and sat down. Its big yellow eyes stared into mine.
“Meow,” it said.
I cut off a piece of my omelet with my fork and then chopped it into even tinier pieces before gathering them into the palm of my hand and placing my hand near the cat. It lapped up the omelet bits with its tongue and licked its face before hopping onto the windowsill to watch the outside activity.
I bit into the piece of cinnamon bread when another knock sounded at the door.
“Come in please, make yourself at home.” I said.
The door opened, and Dr. Laine stepped inside, carrying his medical kit. “Rachel, I am here as per Ms. Harris’ requests. Before I proceed, I will let you finish eating.
As soon as I gulped down the last drop of goat milk, I sighed and closed my eyes, for I understood that I would soon be undergoing a tremendous amount of pain. “How serious are my injuries, doctor?”
“Your arm needs some bandaging and ointment, and in a few weeks, it will be healed.
